I'd grown tired of my previous LJ layout, so I decided to give it a makeover. Something new for the new year, yay!

I'm really happy with how it looks now. I wanted something cleaner and neater, so I took out all the clutter from the sidebar (like the calendar, which had no real use for me) and all the crazy headers featuring my handwriting.

The layout should look like this on Firefox and Safari. It's not optimized for Internet Explorer, but... that's okay.

I finally completed my 365 Toy Project! My first entry was a Halloween photo. So I decided my last entry should be Halloween-themed, too. My goal was to complete this exactly 365 days after I started, and I did it! I'm so glad this is over!

THE THREE STAGES OF STRESS

Stage 1: ALARM
When the threat or stressor is identified or realized, the body's stress response is a state of alarm. During this stage adrenaline will be produced in order to bring about the fight-or-flight response.

Stage 2: RESISTANCE
If the stressor persists, it becomes necessary to attempt some means of coping with the stress. Although the body begins to try to adapt to the strains or demands of the environment, the body cannot keep this up indefinitely, so its resources are gradually depleted.

Stage 3: EXHAUSTION
All the body's resources are eventually depleted and the body is unable to maintain normal function.

And the payoff for all the hard work...

Walking the Southern Ridges Trail

The Southern Ridges is a 9-kilometer walk that begins at Marang Trail near the Harbourfront MRT and ends at Kent Ridge Park. It boasts of lush greens, attractive bridges, and various flora and fauna that surround the trail.

The walk begins at Marang Trail, an uphill climb of paved pathways and metal staircases leading to Mount Faber Park. There, you can enjoy a bird's eye view of coastal Singapore. (Alternately, Mount Faber can also be reached via cable car.)

Connecting Mount Faber to Telok Blangah Hill Park is Singapore's highest pedestrian bridge, the Henderson Waves. Built with wood and curved steel that form waves, the bridge stands 36 meters high from Henderson Road.

Access Telok Blangah Hill Park through Hilltop Walk, approximately 15 minutes away from Forest Walk, a walkway with slight sloping and angular turns, leading you downhill to Alexandra Arch. If you are afraid of heights, it's best to look straight ahead as you pass through Forest Walk's seemingly hollow (but actually sturdy) steel bridge.

Designed like an open leaf, Alexandra Arch leads you to HortPark -- the Gardening Hub. With no raised walkways to possibly make you nervous, HortPark is set in more relaxing surroundings filled with various plants, flowers, and charming themed gardens, which also educate visitors about gardening.

The next stop is Canopy Walk, an elevated path decked in wood, that leads you from Hort Park and into Kent Ridge Park, a old rain forest and now a habitat for groves of trees, and birds, squirrels, and lizards. Also a former site of a battle in 1942, the park's quiet surroundings mark the final stop of the Southern Ridges trail.

A new layout again! It was my first time working with layers -- it wasn't as intimidating as I thought it'd be! Good thing I came across the s2flexisquares community, because their tutorials were really helpful.

I knew my film reel-themed layout wouldn't last long, because that didn't turn out the way I wanted it to. Well, this one did, even if it took me almost 24 hours (not straight, though) to customize! CSS isn't hard to work with, it's just the positioning of elements that drives me nuts. In any case, I'm still very happy with how this turned out. Yay! The layout should look something like this on Firefox (Mac and PC), and probably Safari as well. It looks like crap on Internet Explorer, but I hate that browser anyway, so I don't really care.

That's my handwriting on the headers, by the way!

TV season 2006-2007

I meant to post this earlier but got sidetracked by laziness! Thanks to a long weekend (and to my TV withdrawal, which actually served as my motivation, hah!) I finally got around to it.

Sometime last month, I got to thinking about the series* I've followed throughout the season -- Lost, Heroes, and The Amazing Race, among others. I thought this was overall a good year for TV, but instead of recounting shows' best and worst moments (there's just too many to mention, I believe), I just put together a list of my favorite and least-favorite episodes from this season.

LOST
• Favorite episode: Flashes Before Your Eyes (3.08)
Probably not a popular opinion, but to me it was one of the most solid episodes they've had in the third season. "Not in Portland" was good, but I felt this one started the show's rectification from the six much-maligned episodes that opened the season. This episode also affirmed that Desmond is now my favorite Lost character. Plus, the reveal that he's been trying to save Charlie from dying tied up nicely to the predicaments he had in seasons 1 and 2.

• Least favorite episode: Stranger in a Strange Land (3.09)
Just pointless and useless. Jack's tattoos? Bai Ling? Who the hell cares? Hands down, the worst Lost episode ever.

HEROES
• Favorite episode: The Company Man (1.17)
Character-driven, intense, and emotionally involving, this episode focused on one storyline without alienating itself from the general plot. The one problem I also had with Heroes was its lack of character development (thus my lack of sympathy for the characters), so delving into HRG's backstory was a welcome change for me. Overall, a cohesive, well-thought out episode that proved that Heroes isn't just a show with lots of action! cool hero powers!, and fancy effects! -- it has depth, too.

• Least favorite episode: How to Stop an Exploding Man (1.23)
They spend the entire season building up this moment in New York, and coupled with the momentum from the post-hiatus episodes, this season finale should've been explosive (though not necessarily literally). Instead all we got was... that? It wasn't boring. It was just underwhelming.

VERONICA MARS -- I will miss you, show.
• Favorite episode: Debasement Tapes (3.17)
I can only summarize my love for this episode in two words: Paul Rudd! Okay, three: Drunk!

• Least favorite episode: Un-American Graffiti (3.16)
The mystery of the week I least cared about in this season, probably due to the show drinking too much water from Dawson's Creek. Although I liked them together just fine, I wasn't a Logan/Veronica shipper. But I wasn't jubilant over Piz going "all in" (as per Wallace's advice), either. In short: Next!

UGLY BETTY
• Favorite episode: East Side Story (3.21)
That was the saddest episode of Betty I've seen yet. It also used almost all soap opera clichés, but without seeming incrediby tacky. (Well, IMO, anyway.)

• Least favorite episode: After Hours (3.07)
Too much Walter and Sofia. Meh.

SURVIVOR: FIJI
• Favorite episode: It's A Turtle? (14.10)
Dreamz turns on his alliance to join forces with Team Yau and some major double-crossing happens -- leading up to the awesome pwning of Edgardo and company. The Fiji edition started out really slow, and I was more than ready to give up mid-season, but this particular episode pulled me back in.

• Least favorite episode: Are We Gonna Live On Exile Island? (14.09)
The evil, evil twists -- merging, un-merging for the immunity challenge, losers head to tribal council immediately after said challenge -- rendered Michelle helpless. Because seriously, what else can you do but watch yourself get voted off?

AMERICAN IDOL 6
• Favorite episode: Bon Jovi Night (6.34)
I knew every song that contestants sang (not that there were many, but still), all six were in varying degrees of good, and best of all... BON JOVI! My childhood, right there.

• Least favorite episode: Gwen Stefani's iTunes Playlist Night, or whatever the theme really was (6.24)
Because everyone was in varying degrees of suck and boring, people actually remembered this episode more for The Sanjaya Ponyhawk than the actual performances. Chris Sligh, for the record, you were not on the beat. And where have those pointy-finger group songs gone? I missed them terribly this season.

THE AMAZING RACE: ALL-STARS
• Favorite episode: I Told You Less Martinis And More Cardio (11.01)
All-Stars wasn't as good as I had expected it to be (I give that to season 5, which gave birth to TAR's best quote ever: "My ox is broken!" and I'm very, very proud to say it was exclaimed in this country), but seeing the pilot made me all nostalgic for TAR's earlier seasons. All these teams I've missed! I toyed with the idea that it could suck the way Survivor's all-stars edition did (and now that it's over -- it kind of did), but at least for one episode, I had high, high hopes. And then John Vito and Jill were eliminated. Everything went downhill for me there, but I stuck around due to my emotional attachment to some of the teams.

• Least favorite episode: If I Were In Town, I'd Ask For Your Number (11.07)
Just copying and pasting my post about this episode, because I thought that pretty much explained my disappointment: Putting the Fast Forward clue at the Intersection marker right after a non-elimination leg pretty much screws over the team marked for elimination. Add to that the roadblocks that are less than 30 minutes away from the pitstop. There's really no chance for the last team to a) get the FF, and b) catch up. Their "luck" from the non-elimination leg wasn't really luck at all, as opposed to Uchenna and Joyce's penalty that turned out to be a non-factor.

* I only listed down the shows whose seasons I've already completed.

Ownage

This version of "She Will Be Loved" owned Maroon 5's (for me, at least). It's amazing -- first, he loops his beats, sings over them while he plays his guitar, then layers his vocals, AND THEN samples U2's "With or Without You" towards the end. He is accompanied by piano, which is a bonus for me. Watch it. (I have been, for days. Hee!) It's made of awesome.

It's time for another LJ Reboot! I'm a first-time participant! I finally assed myself to join the reboot (I needed the motivation) and come up with a new layout for my LJ, after keeping the previous one for more than year. It didn't turn out the way I wanted to, but I know that's my fault, because in the process of making a new layout, I only learned one thing: I AM THE WORLD'S WORST PROCRASTINATOR! (Then again, I did make the deadline, so maybe I'm not the worst after all.)

About this layout:
• Theme: film reels. That's where my username comes from. (Thank you, Wikipedia, for explaining it better than I ever could!) And although I post about TV a lot, I do love movies.
• The film reel vectors were drawn by me in Freehand!
• It's an upgrade of my previous layout. One of the reasons why I kept my last one that long wasn't just due to my own laziness. I liked how clean and simple it was, and it looked good in contrast to the wordiness of my friends page! And I'm all for clean lines, a lot of white space, and dark backgrounds.
• The layout is best viewed with Firefox (Mac and PC) or Safari. I'm not sure how it looks on Internet Explorer, because I am actively ignoring the fact that that browser still exists in this world.
